Mayhem and rapture descend on St. Mark’s College, Oxbridge. Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, two young republicans, are declared joint King of Barataria, although they don’t know which is the real king and don’t believe in monarchy anyway. Both are now married (in theory) to Casilda da Plaza-Toro, daughter of a Spanish nobleman, although all three are desperately in love with other people. Meanwhile the chorus don’t care about republicanism or their friends’ predicaments, and just have a great party. Can the machinations of a valet, a Grand Inquisitor, a duke and duchess and the royal nursemaid tie up all the strings? Why, its a G&S, of course they can.
